About the band

Formed in 1996, Finland’s Nightwish have a reputation as the best international representative of the symphonic metal scene. The voice of the lead singer Tarja Turunem is largely responsible for their renown, proving able to transcend borders. Famous in Finland from the release of the very first single, “The Carpenter”, in 1997, it was in 1999 that the band began its international career with the song, “Sleeping Sun” Over time, a variety of musicians and vocalists have performed in the band. In 2005, Tuomas Holopainen, with the support of other band members, decided to part ways with the vocalist Tarja Turunem. She was replaced by Anette Olzon from 2007 to 2012, and then by Floor Jansen, who went on to become a permanent band member. Nightwish’s symphonic metal compositions are always evolving, drawing influences from both heavy metal and pop, and with an ever-present emphasis on orchestral music, resulting in a more varied sound.
